Description

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a RNA virus belonging to the Retroviridae family that can be transmitted from infected cats by saliva or nasal secretions transfer.
The virus invades and replicates itself in various cells, including cells of immune system and blood-forming tissues. This process results in a moderate-severe immune suppression, and there is a progressive deterioration and life-threatening anemia. Other problems, including severe enteritis, neurological disease, and ocular disease are commonly associated with FeLV infection.
Diagnosis of FeLV infection is relatively simple. A rapid blood test can be performed, but in some situations, it may be necessary to confirm infection through more sophisticated tests. Therefore this qPCR assay might help to an accurate, sensitive and rapid diagnosis of this pathogen.
