Description

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus of the family Retroviridae that infects domestic and wild felines, primarily targeting cells of the immune system.
Infection leads to a progressive immunosuppressive condition characterized by increased susceptibility to secondary infections, chronic disease, weight loss and, in advanced stages, severe systemic illness. The impact is mainly clinical, affecting animal health and lifespan.
Conventional methods such as serology may not distinguish early or active infections. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of FIV nucleic acids directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
