Pathogen: Feline Herpesvirus
Description
Feline Herpesvirus (family Herpesviridae), also known as Felid alphaherpesvirus 1 and closely related to canine herpesvirus-1, is an important cause of acute upper respiratory tract and ocular disease in cats. There is only one serotype of the virus and it is relatively homogenous genetically. Clinical signs include coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, sometimes fever and loss of apetite.
Diagnosis of FeHV-1 is usually performed by clinical signs observation, especially corneal ulceration, but it can be done by direct inmmunofluorescence, virus isolation or histological analysis of cells from the tonsils, nasal tissue or nictitating membrane. Nevertheless, real time PCR is a faster and less time-consuming method for the efficient detection of this pathogenic agent.
