Description
Equine parvovirus, also known as equine parvovirus-hepatitis (EqPV-H), is a non-enveloped single-stranded DNA virus of the family Parvoviridae that primarily infects horses.
It is associated with equine serum hepatitis (Theiler’s disease), a condition characterized by acute liver failure, icterus and high mortality. Although many infections may be subclinical, severe cases can have significant clinical impact. Transmission has been linked to biological products and parenteral exposure.
Conventional detection methods based on serology may not reliably identify active infection. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of equine parvovirus DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
