Pathogen: Eimeria magna
Description
Eimeria magna is an apicomplexan protozoan parasite that infects the intestinal tract of rabbits and is one of the most prevalent and pathogenic Eimeria species affecting commercial and domestic rabbit populations.
Infection causes intestinal coccidiosis, characterized by diarrhea, reduced weight gain, poor feed conversion and, in severe cases, mortality, particularly in young animals. The disease can have a significant economic impact on rabbit production due to decreased performance and increased management costs.
Conventional detection methods based on microscopic identification of oocysts may be labor-intensive and do not always allow reliable species differentiation. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of E. magna DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
