Description

Eimeria spp. are apicomplexan protozoan parasites that infect the intestinal tract of a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including poultry, ruminants, rabbits and other domestic animals. These parasites are the causative agents of coccidiosis, one of the most important enteric diseases in animal production worldwide.
Infection may cause diarrhea, dehydration, poor feed conversion, reduced growth performance and increased mortality, particularly in young animals. Disease severity varies according to the Eimeria species involved, parasite burden, host age and immune status, often resulting in significant economic losses in livestock and poultry production.
Conventional detection methods based on microscopic identification of oocysts may be labor-intensive and may not allow accurate species differentiation. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Eimeria DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.

This assay detects a broad range of Eimeria species affecting poultry, ruminants, rabbits and other animal hosts, including E. tenella, E. acervulina, E. maxima, E. necatrix, E. brunetti, E. mitis, E. praecox, E. meleagrimitis, E. adenoeides, E. meleagridis, E. bovis, E. zuernii, E. alabamensis, E. auburnensis, E. ahsata, E. ovinoidalis, E. crandallis, E. parva, E. arloingi, E. ninakohlyakimovae, E. christenseni, E. caprovina, E. stiedai, E. magna, E. intestinalis, E. irresidua, E. perforans and E. media, covering the principal pathogenic species reported in poultry, cattle, sheep, goats and rabbits.
