Description
Equine herpesvirus 5 (EHV-5) is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus of the family Herpesviridae, classified within the gammaherpesviruses, and commonly infects equids worldwide.
Infection is often subclinical, but EHV-5 has been associated with respiratory disease and, in some cases, equine multinodular pulmonary fibrosis (EMPF), a chronic and potentially severe lung condition. The virus can establish persistent infections and is frequently detected in both healthy and affected animals.
Conventional detection methods such as virus isolation may be limited by latency and low viral loads. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of EHV-5 DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
