Description
Equine herpesvirus 4 (EHV-4) is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus of the family Herpesviridae that infects equids worldwide, primarily targeting the upper respiratory tract.
It is mainly associated with respiratory disease in young horses, characterized by fever, nasal discharge and coughing. Although generally less severe than EHV-1, it can facilitate secondary infections and impact performance in affected animals.
Conventional detection methods such as virus isolation may be time-consuming or influenced by sample quality. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of EHV-4 DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
