Description

Equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus of the family Herpesviridae that infects equids worldwide, primarily targeting the respiratory and reproductive systems.
It is associated with respiratory disease, abortion, neonatal death and neurological disorders (equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy), leading to significant clinical and economic impact in equine populations. The virus can establish latency and reactivate, facilitating transmission.
Conventional detection methods such as virus isolation may be time-consuming or influenced by sample quality and infection stage. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of EHV-1 DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
