Description

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) is a non-enveloped, double-stranded RNA virus of the family Reoviridae (genus Orbivirus) that infects wild and domestic ruminants, particularly deer and cattle.
It is the causative agent of epizootic hemorrhagic disease, characterized by fever, edema, hemorrhages and, in severe cases, high mortality, especially in deer populations. In cattle, infections are often milder but may still impact health and productivity.
Conventional detection methods such as virus isolation or serology may be time-consuming or limited in early infection. Real-time RT-PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of EHDV RNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
