Description
Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) is a major etiologic agent of infectious gastroenteritis in young dogs. It has spread worldwide since its emergence in 1970´s. This virus is found frequently and endures for long periods of time in the environment, thus, it became in a great concern for owners and breeders. The infection leads to a rapid loss of condition of the animal and if not treated at an early stage will eventually lead to the death of the animal.
Several diagnostic tests have been established for detection of CPV-2 in fecal samples such as virus isolation, ELISA, IC or HA. Those techniques presents some handicaps because they are time consuming and sometimes lack of sensitivity. The development of a qPCR kit allows a very rapid and sensitive detection of this virus which considerably helps the diagnosis.
