Pathogen: Canine Distemper virus
Description
Canine distemper is caused by a single-stranded RNA paramyxovirus. It affects a wide variety of animal families, mainly dogs, coyotes, foxes, etc, and is highly contagious via inhalation. Morbidity-mortality may vary greatly, with up to 100% mortality in unvaccinated populations. Canine distemper virus (CDV) affects gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, spinal cord and brain, causing high fever, eye inflammation and eye/nose discharge, coughing, vomiting and diarrhea and hardening of nose and footpads.
Clinical diagnosis is difficult due to the broad spectrum of signs. Accordingly, a laboratory confirmation is required, q-PCR technique is the most suitable method to confirm the presence of this virus. Urines, tonsil, conjunctival swabs and whole blood were found to contain high virus loads and therefore proved to be suitable targets for detection of canine distemper virus RNA.
