Pathogen: Clostridium spiroforme
Description
Clostridium spiroforme is an anaerobic Gram-positive bacterium that colonizes the intestinal tract, particularly in rabbits, where it can act as an opportunistic pathogen.
It is associated with enterotoxemia characterized by acute diarrhea, dehydration and high mortality, especially in young animals. The disease can have a significant impact in rabbit production systems due to rapid outbreaks and losses.
Conventional detection methods based on culture or toxin identification may be limited by sensitivity or turnaround time. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of C. spiroforme DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
