Description

Cryptosporidium spp. are apicomplexan protozoan parasites that infect the gastrointestinal tract of a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including livestock, companion animals, wildlife and birds. These parasites are distributed worldwide and are transmitted through the ingestion of environmentally resistant oocysts.
Cryptosporidiosis is primarily associated with enteric disease characterized by diarrhea, dehydration and reduced growth, particularly in young animals. The infection is considered an important cause of neonatal diarrhea in calves, lambs and goat kids, resulting in significant economic losses in livestock production.
Conventional detection methods such as microscopy may have limited sensitivity and require experienced interpretation. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Cryptosporidium DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects multiple Cryptosporidium species, including clinically relevant species such as C. parvum, C. hominis, C. canis, C. meleagridis, C. andersoni, C. ubiquitum, C. cuniculus and C. galli, among other species reported in mammals, birds and reptiles.
