Description
Campylobacter spp. are Gram-negative, curved bacteria that colonize the gastrointestinal and reproductive tracts of a wide range of animal species. Several species are of veterinary importance, including C. fetus, associated with infertility and abortion in cattle, sheep and goats, and C. jejuni, a common cause of enteric disease in poultry and companion animals.
Campylobacter infections can lead to reproductive disorders, diarrhea and reduced productivity, resulting in significant economic impact in livestock production. Animals may also act as asymptomatic carriers, contributing to pathogen persistence and transmission.
Conventional detection based on culture can be laborious due to the fastidious growth requirements of these bacteria. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Campylobacter DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects clinically relevant species including C. coli, C. fetus (including subsp. fetus and subsp. venerealis) and C. jejuni.
