Pathogen: C. perfringens Iota Toxin
Description
Clostridium perfringens is associated with a wide variety of diseases in domestic animals and humans. Toxin typing of C. perfringens is important since particular toxin types are associated with specific enteric diseases. Depending on the production of 4 major toxins (alfa, beta, epsilon and iota) they are divided into 5 toxigenic types A to E. Adittionally, other toxins: beta-2- and enterotoxin may contribute to the disease. Bioassays and serological test are used to classify C. perfringens; but, these tests are laborious and expensive. Nowadays, typing is achieved by detecting the encoding gene(s) by qPCR. However it should be considered that presence does not necessarily imply that the encoded protein is actually produced.
