Pathogen: Cryptosporidium parvum
Description
Cryptosporidium parvum is an apicomplexan parasite that infects the gastrointestinal tract of a wide range of animals and also humans around the world. This enteric pathogen is considered an important agent in the aetiology of the neonatal diarrhoea syndrome of calves, lambs and kid goats, causing considerable economic losses to livestock industry.
Detection of C. parvum has been based on conventional techniques such as the immunological tests, histochemical staining and microscopy that allow identification of oocyst of this pathogen. Recently, the use of molecular techniques has offered a more sensitive and specific alternative to the identification of C. parvum on clinical and also environmental samples.
