Description

Clostridium haemolyticum is an anaerobic Gram-positive bacterium that forms spores and persists in the environment, particularly in soil. It is an opportunistic pathogen affecting mainly cattle and small ruminants.
It is the causative agent of bacillary hemoglobinuria, characterized by acute intravascular hemolysis, anemia, hemoglobinuria and sudden death. Infection is often associated with hepatic damage caused by parasitic migration, leading to significant economic losses in livestock.
Conventional detection based on culture may be limited by strict anaerobic requirements and rapid disease progression. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of C. haemolyticum DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
