Description

Chlamydiaceae is a family of obligate intracellular bacteria that infect a wide range of animal hosts. Members of this family are associated with diverse clinical conditions, including abortion, reproductive disorders, pneumonia, conjunctivitis, arthritis and enteric disease, leading to significant health and economic impacts in livestock, companion animals and poultry.
The clinical presentation varies according to the infecting species and host. Important veterinary pathogens include Chlamydia abortus in small ruminants, C. psittaci in birds, C. pecorum in ruminants, C. felis in cats and C. suis in pigs. Infections may be subclinical or persistent, contributing to pathogen circulation within animal populations.
Conventional methods such as culture, antigen detection and serology may be laborious or have limited sensitivity. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Chlamydiaceae DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects multiple members of the family Chlamydiaceae, including Chlamydia abortus, C. psittaci, C. pecorum, C. felis, C. suis, C. gallinacea, C. avium, C. caviae, C. pneumoniae, C. trachomatis, C. muridarum, C. buteonis, C. crocodili, C. poikilotherma and Candidatus Chlamydia sanziniae, providing broad coverage of species reported in mammals, birds and reptiles.
