Description

Campylobacter hepaticus is a Gram-negative, curved bacterium belonging to the family Campylobacteraceae that primarily affects laying hens and breeder flocks.
It is the causative agent of spotty liver disease (SLD), an emerging condition characterized by reduced egg production, increased mortality and multifocal hepatic lesions. The disease can have a significant economic impact on poultry production due to production losses and increased flock management costs.
Conventional detection based on bacterial culture may be challenging due to the fastidious growth requirements of the organism. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of C. hepaticus DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
