EXOone Campylobacter fetus

Description

Campylobacter fetus is a Gram-negative, curved bacterium belonging to the family Campylobacteraceae, adapted to colonize the gastrointestinal and reproductive tracts of livestock, particularly cattle and small ruminants.
It is associated with reproductive disease, including infertility and abortion, mainly caused by C. fetus subsp. venerealis in cattle and subsp. fetus in sheep and goats. These infections lead to reproductive failure and significant economic losses in livestock production.
Conventional detection by culture is laborious and requires specialized conditions, while differentiation between subspecies may be difficult. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of C. fetus DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
