Pathogen: Brucella suis
Description
Brucellosis is a zoonotic bacterial disease caused by several species in the genus
Brucella. Brucella suis is differentiated into five biovars (strains), where biovars 1-3 infect wild boar and domestic pigs, and the may cause severe diseases in humans. The disease typically causes chronic inflammatory lesions in the reproductive organs of susceptible animals or orchitis, and may even affect joints and other organs. The most common symptom is abortion in pregnant susceptible sows at any stage of gestation.
Real Time PCR allows for B. suis detection with high sensivity and specificity at species level even in clinical samples. It is a reliable alternative to other techniques such as card aglutination or biochemical tests.
