Description

Brucella spp. are facultative intracellular Gram-negative bacteria that infect a wide range of domestic and wild animals. Different species show host preferences, including B. abortus in cattle, B. melitensis in sheep and goats, B. suis in pigs and B. canis in dogs.
Brucellosis is a contagious disease mainly associated with abortion, infertility and other reproductive disorders, leading to significant economic losses in livestock production. The pathogen may persist within infected populations, contributing to long-term transmission and control challenges.
Conventional detection methods such as bacterial isolation are laborious, require specialized facilities and may take several days to obtain results. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Brucella DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects multiple Brucella species, including B. abortus, B. melitensis, B. suis, B. canis, B. ovis, B. ceti, B. pinnipedialis and B. inopinata.
