Description

Brachyspira spp. are anaerobic spirochete bacteria that colonize the intestinal tract of a wide range of animal species, particularly pigs and poultry. Several species are associated with enteric disease, including B. hyodysenteriae, the causative agent of swine dysentery, as well as B. pilosicoli and B. hampsonii in pigs, and B. intermedia, B. alvinipulli and B. pulli in poultry, all of which have been linked to diarrhea, reduced growth performance and production losses.
Brachyspira infections can have a significant economic impact due to decreased productivity, impaired feed efficiency and increased control measures. In addition, species such as B. innocens and B. murdochii are frequently detected in livestock, although their pathogenic role is considered limited or uncertain.
Conventional detection and identification of Brachyspira species by culture can be laborious and require specialized expertise. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Brachyspira DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects multiple Brachyspira species, including B. hyodysenteriae, B. pilosicoli, B. hampsonii, B. intermedia, B. murdochii, B. innocens, B. suanatina, B. canis, B. pulli and B. alvinipulli, covering the species most commonly reported in swine and poultry.
