Description

Brucella canis is a facultative intracellular Gram-negative bacterium that primarily infects dogs and other canids. It is the causative agent of canine brucellosis, a contagious disease with worldwide distribution that mainly affects the reproductive system.
Infection is associated with abortion, infertility, embryonic death and reproductive failure in breeding animals. Other clinical manifestations may include lymphadenopathy, discospondylitis, uveitis and chronic systemic disease. Infected dogs can remain asymptomatic while continuing to shed the bacterium, contributing to its persistence within kennels and breeding populations.
Conventional detection methods such as bacterial isolation and serology may be labor-intensive or have limited sensitivity during certain stages of infection. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of B. canis DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects Brucella canis DNA and can be used for the investigation and monitoring of canine brucellosis in breeding and companion animal populations.
