Description

Brucella ovis is a facultative intracellular Gram-negative bacterium that primarily infects sheep and is distributed in sheep-producing regions worldwide.
It is the causative agent of ovine brucellosis, a disease mainly associated with epididymitis, orchitis and reduced fertility in rams. Infection may also cause reproductive losses in ewes, leading to decreased flock productivity and significant economic impact on sheep production systems.
Conventional detection methods such as bacterial isolation and serology may be labor-intensive or have limitations in identifying infected animals. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of B. ovis DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
