EXOone Brucella melitensis

Description

Brucellosis is a zoonotic bacterial diseas caused by several species in the genus Brucella. Brucella melitensis is a Gram negative coccobacillus. Sheeps and goats are the usual hosts for B. melitensis, but this bacterium can be also present in camels and cattle. Small ruminants often acquire B. melitensis by contact with organisms in vaginal discharges and birth products (e.g., placenta, fetus, fetal fluids). The predominant clinical sign are abortions, stillbirths and the birth of weak offspring. Another common sign is low milk yields.

Real Time PCR allows for B. melitensis detection with high sensivity and specificity at species level even in clinical samples. It is a reliable alternative to other techniques such as card aglutination or biochemical tests.
