Description

Bordetella avium is a Gram-negative bacterium that infects the upper respiratory tract of birds, particularly poultry such as turkeys and chickens.
It is the etiological agent of bordetellosis, a contagious respiratory disease characterized by tracheal inflammation, nasal discharge and reduced growth, often complicated by secondary infections. The disease can lead to significant economic losses due to decreased productivity and flock performance.
Conventional detection methods based on culture may be time-consuming and influenced by sample quality or co-infections. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of B. avium DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
