Description

Bibersteinia trehalosi is a Gram-negative bacterium of the family Pasteurellaceae that commonly colonizes the upper respiratory tract of sheep and goats. Under certain conditions, it can act as an opportunistic pathogen, particularly in animals exposed to stress, coinfections or adverse environmental factors.
It is associated with respiratory disease, septicemia, pneumonia and sudden death, especially in lambs. Infections can contribute to significant economic losses due to mortality, reduced productivity and increased treatment costs in small ruminant production systems.
Conventional detection methods based on culture may be time-consuming and can be affected by the presence of closely related bacterial species. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of B. trehalosi DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
