Description

BHV-4 causes reproductive disease with endometritis, vulvovaginitis, abortion and mastitis. However , most of cases remain subclinical. This virus replicates within mucosal cells and then invades the mononuclear cells, causing generalised infection and crossing the placenta to infect the unborn foetus.
Although its main concern is related to cattle a range of ruminants can be infected, including American bison, buffalo, sheep and goats.
BHV-4 can be detected by qPCR in nasal and vaginal swabs as well abortion tissues. Vaginal swabs seem a convenient specimen for detecting this virus in cases with clinical signs of acute postpartum metritis.
