Description

Bovine herpesvirus 2 (BoHV-2) is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus of the family Herpesviridae that infects cattle worldwide. Like other herpesviruses, it can establish latent infections and reactivate under stress or immunosuppressive conditions.
BoHV-2 is primarily associated with bovine herpes mammillitis, a disease characterized by vesicular and ulcerative lesions of the teats and udder that can lead to pain, reduced milk production and increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infections. The virus has also been associated with pseudo-lumpy skin disease, causing cutaneous nodules and skin lesions.
Conventional detection methods such as virus isolation may be laborious and influenced by sample quality and infection stage. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of BoHV-2 DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
