Description

Bartonella henselae is a Gram-negative, vector-borne bacterium that infects erythrocytes and endothelial cells, commonly transmitted by fleas, particularly in cat populations.
It is associated with subclinical infections in cats, which act as the main reservoir, but can also cause systemic disease under certain conditions. Persistence and circulation within animal populations contribute to its epidemiological relevance.
Conventional detection methods such as culture are slow and difficult due to fastidious growth requirements. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of B. henselae DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
