EXOone Babesia caballi

Description

Babesia caballi is an intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite transmitted by ticks that infects equids and is distributed in many regions where competent vectors are present.
It is one of the causative agents of equine piroplasmosis, a disease characterized by fever, anemia, jaundice and reduced performance. Infections are often less persistent than those caused by Theileria equi, but can still impact animal health and movement due to carrier states.
Conventional detection methods such as microscopy and serology may lack sensitivity, particularly in low parasitemia or early infection stages. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of B. caballi DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
