EXOone Borrelia burgdorferi

Description

Borrelia burgdorferi is a Gram-negative spirochetal which causes Lyme disease (also called Lyme borreliosis) in humans and animals (primarily in dogs). In dogs it is one of the most common tick-transmitted diseases in the world, but it only produces symptoms in 10% of affected animals. It causes fever, general malaise, lameness due to inflammation of the joints and sewlling of local lymph nodes.
Detection of B. burgdorferi is difficult because no specific pathognomonic signs exist and methods such as culture or microscopy are time consuming and are often not sensitive enough. Therefore, molecular tools like ELISA or Real Time PCR allows a faster, more reliable and sensitive diagnosis.
