Description

Bordetella bronchiseptica is an ubiquitous bacterium and causes respiratory disease in swine and dogs affecting the youngest animals and piglets. Regarding pigs, B. bronchiseptica and Pasteurella multocida are the etiologic agents of progressive atrophic rhinitis and bronchopneumonia.
Bordetella bronchiseptica is the most common bacteria isolated from dogs with infectious tracheobronchitis (Kennel cough). Animal will shed the bacteria for 6 to 14 weeks post infection and can spread the disease to other susceptible animals during that time.
The detection of B. bronchiseptica currently involves classic cultivation and biochemical characterization. qPCR overcomes some of the limitations of culture and serological methods for the diagnosis of Bordetella infections.
