Description

Bartonella spp. are Gram-negative, vector-borne bacteria that infect a wide range of mammals, primarily targeting erythrocytes and endothelial cells. They are transmitted by arthropods such as fleas, ticks and lice.
Infection is associated with chronic or subclinical conditions, but may also cause endocarditis, vasculitis and systemic disease. These pathogens are of clinical relevance in companion animals and represent an important zoonotic risk.
Conventional detection methods such as culture are difficult and time-consuming due to fastidious growth requirements. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Bartonella DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects multiple Bartonella species, including clinically relevant pathogens such as B. henselae, B. quintana, B. vinsonii (including subsp. berkhoffii), B. clarridgeiae, B. koehlerae and B. bacilliformis, among other species circulating in animals and humans.
