Pathogen: Equine viral arteritis
Description
Equine viral arteritis (EVA) is caused by equine arteritis virus (EAV), an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus of the family Arteriviridae that infects equids worldwide.
Infection may cause respiratory disease, fever, edema, abortion in pregnant mares and reduced fertility in stallions. While many infections are subclinical, the disease can have a significant impact on breeding programs and international horse movement due to its transmissibility, particularly via semen.
Conventional detection methods such as virus isolation or serology may be time-consuming or limited in early infection stages. Real-time RT-PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of EAV RNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and monitoring.
