EXOone Actinobacillus suis

Description

Actinobacillus suis is a beta-haemolytic, Gram-negative bacterium, facultative anaerobe and a common commensal of the tonsils of the soft palate of swine. However, under unknown conditions, it can invade the bloodstream of all ages, resulting in sepcticaemia and sequelae such as meningitis, arthritis and pneumonia.
Diagnosis can be difficult as its clinical signs are similar to other pathogens (Streptococcus suis and Haemophilus parasuis). Besides, isolation of A. suis from clinical specimens may not always be possible for many reasons, such as treatment with antibacterial agents or improper sample handling. Because of that, detection of this pathogen with qPCR tecnique allows a rapid, easy, specific and sensitive diagnosis and for the control of A. suis outbreaks.
