Description

Porcine Pleuropneumonia is considered to be a severe and contagious respiratory disease with potential high morbidity and mortality rates whose etiological agent is Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App). This bacterium is worldwide spread and 18 serotypes have been described to date. However, they vary widely in virulence and significance across countries.
Many animals can be infected but only in some of them the disease will occur. After overcoming the infection, some animals might remain as carriers and shedders of App constituting the main cause of transmission.
Traditionally microbiological isolation has been used to detect this microorganism. Nevertheless, some drawbacks such as the difficulty of sampling and the low sensitivity of the technique might complicate the isolation making it tedious and time consuming. Molecular tests like qPCR could be considered as an usable tool to solve this issue.
