Description

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacterium of the order Rickettsiales that infects neutrophils and is transmitted by ticks. It affects a wide range of hosts, including ruminants, horses, dogs and humans.
Infection causes granulocytic anaplasmosis, characterized by fever, lethargy, reduced performance and hematological alterations such as thrombocytopenia. Clinical impact ranges from subclinical infection to severe disease and represents an important zoonotic risk.
Microscopy and serology may lack sensitivity or fail to distinguish active infection. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of A. phagocytophilum DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting early identification and surveillance.
