Pathogen: Anaplasma spp.
Description
Anaplasma spp. are obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacteria of the order Rickettsiales that infect blood cells and are primarily transmitted by ticks. These pathogens affect a wide range of domestic and wild animals and are distributed worldwide.
Infection can lead to anemia, fever, lethargy, reduced productivity and reproductive losses, with clinical severity varying according to the host and the infecting species. Carrier animals play an important role in the maintenance and spread of infection within herds and flocks.
Conventional methods such as microscopy and serology may have limited sensitivity or may not differentiate active infections. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of Anaplasma DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
This assay detects multiple Anaplasma species, including A. marginale, A. centrale, A. phagocytophilum, A. platys, A. bovis, A. ovis and A. capra, covering the most clinically relevant species affecting livestock and companion animals.
