Description

Aleutian mink disease virus (AMDV) is a non-enveloped single-stranded DNA virus belonging to the family Parvoviridae that primarily infects mustelids, including mink, ferrets and related species.
The virus is the causative agent of Aleutian disease, a chronic progressive infection characterized by persistent immune stimulation, hypergammaglobulinemia, reduced fertility, poor growth, weight loss and increased mortality. The disease can have a major economic impact in farmed mink populations due to reproductive losses and reduced productivity.
Conventional detection methods based on serology may not reliably identify all stages of infection, while virus isolation is not routinely performed. Real-time PCR enables rapid, sensitive and specific detection of AMDV DNA directly from clinical samples, supporting analytical detection and surveillance.
